May 17, 2010 Isn’t this just the strangest spring ever? Usually, by mid May, it’s HOT, and humid, and we’ ve already enjoyed the best of spring evenings, only waiting for the SUMMER to kick in. But, even as I write, it’s once again cold……. From hot and muggy this morning, to cold tonight. I haven’t completely given up my winter blanket for my bed, and my air conditioning just isn’t sure whether it should be working or not. Even my flip flops are a dicey choice…. It might seem a perfect morning to make my toes happy….. but by mid afternoon, I’m looking for socks!! Of course, I guess you could say that about life in general. We just can’t really count on our plans to go as expected. Jobs that were readily available a year ago have disappeared. Industries that were stalwarts of our economy have dried up, or are hobbling along. Technology has made some amazing advances, and we carry around ‘mini-computers’ in our hands just like Dick Tracy had back in the Sunday funnies days. We are of a ‘certain age’……. yet nothing really seems certain anymore! Jobs, friends, family…… it’s all changing, and we have choices about accepting those changes. We can become the cranky, fussy old coots (hmmm, images of certain family members no longer with me come to mind!!) that resist anything new, and thus close our minds to new experiences, new learning, and new friends. OR, we can embrace it….. use those brain cells, and try something new. Have you figured out how to send a tweet? Better yet, have you figured out WHY you should send a tweet? Have you learned how to work your digital camera? Better yet, have you figured out how to get an image OUT of your digital camera? When was the last time you took a class just to learn a new skill? A new language? You always said you were going to take that dance class……… or do a road trip….. or whatever it is that is on your “bucket list”. Now’s the time….. what are you waiting for? PartyFish is here to help you find your community of friends, your community of activities and fun things to do….because TODAY you can be sure you won’t regret tomorrow!! December 16, 2009 What? Next week is CHRISTMAS?? Where did the month go? Well, let’s hurry, then, and get to the important stuff…like what is PartyFish doing in the next couple of weeks? Details for the following events are located at www.partyfish.net/Events First…… THURSDAY night (tomorrow, the 17th), it’s our Monthly Dinner out. Our ABC dinner this month is V for the VAULT, in downtown Fort Worth. Looks like a nice place, with great Mediterranean food… and reasonably priced pasta and pizza too! Contact Phyllis ASAP to let her know you are coming…….. Don’t just show up, this is a reservation kind of place! Friday, December 18,it’s the Stagecoach Christmas Dance. Wear holiday red, and be prepared to dance up a storm. If you’ve not been to Stagecoach in a while…… this is the night to GO! Christmas Day…… We’ve got two places for Christmas Day potluck dinner, one in Haltom City and the other in Mansfield. We want to make sure that no one stays home alone….unless you want to!! Then, there are THREE New Year’s Eve Parties listed……..how will I ever decide which one to go to? They all look like FUN! Hmmm……maybe all three???? The Alaska Cruise for July 2010 is filling up. Our group cabins are based on availability now. We still have one lady needing a roomie, for an oceanview cabin so if you were thinking about going, this would be the time. It’s a great group of people going…….. and Alaska should be on everyone’s “to see” list! What will be new in 2010? Well, for one thing, PartyFish is moving towards social media! Follow us on twitter at http://twitter.com/partyfish1 This is a great way to ease into Twitter…… take it slow, and keep up with other PartyFishers and new things going on in a real time manner. Facebook and the PartyFish blog are under construction…….. it’s going to be a great year for communicating!!! I want to wish each of you a Merry, blessed Christmas, and wondrous joy for the New Year. 2010 is going to be great for all of us……… Karen <>< November 16, 2009 Going on my 8th month of unemployment……. It’s been an interesting journey, and it’s not over yet! I know that there are a lot of you out there, riding along with me, so at least we are in good company! I have been learning a great deal about the networking groups available in the DFW area. I know a lot of people (usually those with jobs!) ask, Why network with a bunch of unemployed people? That doesn’t seem like a good source of job leads. The truth is, it’s a GREAT source of job leads. I am meeting people every week… bright, dynamic, smart, talented,… people who will find a job, and hopefully will remember ME and let me know when something comes along for my skill set! When you’re unemployed and looking for your next great position, it’s important that you let EVERYONE know that you are looking. I’ve seen people land, based on a comment by a “friend who has a friend who knows someone who is looking for a particular candidate”. I’ve met actors and musicians, educators, CFOs, EVPs, project managers for any type of project you can imagine, IT experts in a variety of disciplines, and many other occupations. So, with this knowledge, I’ve created a page of networking groups to help those of you that are UNEMPLOYED (or about to be)….. http://www.partyfish.net/JobNetworkingInfo.html This page lists my personal favorites… and ones you can find me at, as well! Check it out … forward it to a friend. And look for me on Mondays and Thursdays… I volunteer at two groups, and, if you have to be unemployed, I’d love to see you at these groups! October 2, 2009 (a small glitch in my email lists has delayed this edition of the PartyFish Alert. The good news is, I am just a tad bit smarter when it comes to all things computer!!...kg) Last week it was summer. This week, it’s fall…….. In the blink of an eye, things change. Things are always changing. And we have to be able to adapt, or get left behind. I mean, seriously, if you hung on to summer, you’re going to feel pretty silly (and mighty chilled) in about 2 months if you’re still wearing flip flops and lightweight cottons! Yesterday you had a job, today you don’t. Last year you were married, today you’re not. You dropped your little one off at his first day of school…. except this time, it’s your grandson! Last month, you were talking to your college buddy. Last week, you’re attending her funeral. Time IS flying by…. And the older we get, it definitely flies by faster. Have you dared to look at your life in retrospect? Do you remember your dreams and your goals? Have you moved them to some side shelf in your memory, collecting dust? Life is not going to be the same as it was. It’s not supposed to be. You are where you are today… for good, bad, or whatever… because you are SUPPOSED to be here. God knows what He is doing, even if we’re not sure, even if we have doubts., even if we just don’t agree!! "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 Maybe our future seems to be on the ‘short side’ of our lives now… but that doesn’t mean it is any less wonderful, and is probably even better than what we’ve put behind us. TODAY is what counts……. So take a look at your life, and be honest. What would you change? How would you change it? And most importantly, when WILL you change it to make it what you dream for? Get those brain cells working, learn something new. Get those endorphins working, meet some new friends. Get those saggy muscles working, and try dancing, or hiking, or exercising. Do it, do it, do it!! God has the plans….. you’ve got to supply the actions!!! July 22, 2009 Call it jet lag, or sea legs, or just plain summer slowness…… but it’s been really hard getting back into the swing of things after returning from Barcelona . Partyfish has added yet another successful cruise to our history, and left our mark in southern Europe ! The Mediterranean cruise was amazing… each day, each port was better than the day before. Someone asked me, which was my favorite? I couldn’t honestly say. Each was different enough on its own, and offered so much that I can’t make a favorite! In fact, I’m still working through over 1700 photos that Scott and I took.. and I haven’t even had a chance to see what the other 28 cruisers did with their cameras! I hope to get a photo essay done within the next couple of weeks posted to the website for all to see. In the meantime, since most of you missed this opportunity… I don’t want you to miss the Cruise Schedule for 2010! Our January Caribbean Cruise is shaping up quite nicely, with some of the best cruise pricing I’ve seen, EVER! We’ve filled about half of our allotment, and the rest are going quickly. We’ll keep adding cabins as we need them, but the pricing may not be as good. (yep, that’s a ‘hurry up and book now’ message!!) Just imagine.. 7 days in the Caribbean …. Three ports, and three leisurely days at sea. Warm, sunshiny days in the end of January….. For less than $75 a day!!!! If you haven’t booked yet, you definitely should. Or, if you’re saving your vacation time for the summer months, we’ve finally scheduled the ALASKAN CRUISE. July 27-August 3, 7 days out of Seattle . See the grandeur of God’s Creations! And, guys, did I mention it's a GREAT way to meet some fabulous ladies!!???!! October 27, 2008 The last week of October… the first week of really cool weather…. And we’re about to FALL BACK and watch the nights get darker earlier! Perfect time to try something new, meet some new friends and get outta that rut you’ve been in!!! But nobody says it’s going to be easy. You still have to make an effort. Just because you show up at something doesn’t mean you can just sit back and wait for the ‘new friends’ to gather round. Someone once said, “Prince Charming isn’t out there knocking on doors…. He’s out there chasing dragons.” So, you’ve got to go where the dragons are…….. learning a new dance step, taking a road trip with new faces, show up for dinner or lunch. Embrace life, and you’ll be surprised at the excitement that awaits. Cindy contacted PF several months ago, looking to start a ‘new life’…. She was undergoing a traumatic divorce (aren’t they all!!) and found herself on the short side of family and friends. To finish reading Cindy’s story, go to She found PF through a friend, and decided to get ‘her feet wet’ at one of the Bible Studies listed on the site. That week after attending, the Bible Study organized a ‘chick flick’ night, and Cindy decided to go. She had only been once, and didn’t really know any of the gals, but she wanted to see the movie, and she wanted to get out of the house! Well, AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, the movie was a sell-out, and Cindy didn’t get a ticket, along with about 5 other ladies. Now, how many of you would have just said,’ tough luck’, and gone home and wallowed in self pity? Cindy, however, realized that there were other gals in the same boat, and when she confirmed they were with the same group, they all decided to head to another theater and catch the same movie there! They carpooled up, headed to Grapevine, only to find out that they had missed THAT showing. By this time, they shared a common mission, TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!..., and made plans to go the following Friday night….but not before heading to a nearby ice cream shop and laughing and talking and getting to know each other! It was a fine evening indeed, and AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, Cindy started close friendships with each of the gals, who made sure to include her in other activities. Sometimes our plans are not as WE planned them…. We have to remember that a Higher Power is involved, and that many doors are waiting for you to enter, to become the person you were meant to be. But it’s not easy, and it’s certainly not passive…. You have to take action, and get out there, and just do it! Be like Cindy, and let’s see what kind of lemonade YOU can make!!! |
